Resource Centre
The Resource Centre is a very important element of our school and supports the literacy and technology policies that underpin our learning. The fiction catalogue has been arranged into a genre based collection much like a video shop. “It is unrealistic to expect the average teenage reader to be familiar with more than a few writers. In our fiction collection they can chose by genre. “This user friendly method of locating novels has been a huge success. Reading for pleasure has increased by over 200% since 2000. The resource centre staff are particularly thrilled that so many boys are amongst the Frequent Readers. Students who read 8 novels can apply for membership to the Frequent Readers Club and receive rewards of canteen vouchers. They can also request books to buy. The Tuesday sport afternoon Reading Club has proven very popular.
Students have access to the library catalogue from every computer in the school and via this database can also log on to any of the 2,000 recommended websites. The non-fiction collection has been simplified to include Reference works as well. With 40,000 resources including 2,000 catalogued websites, an extensive video collection, 30 computers, a photocopier, 2 classrooms, an audio- visual room and quiet study areas, Robina State High School's Resource Centre is a hub of activity.
The staff gain a great deal of satisfaction from showing students efficient ways to locate and use information and from the increasing number of readers who now seek their recommendations for recreational reading.
